Yakima Valley Community College is pleased to announce the expansion of YVCC’s Vineyard and Winery Technology Program through a grant awarded by the National Science Foundation.
Yakima Valley Community College's Vineyard & Winery Technology Program received a three year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to redesign YVCC’s 2-year AAS programs in Vineyard and Winery Technology. The program changes address the growing demand for employment in the Washington State’s wine industry.
The grant funded project will adjust the Vineyard and Winery Technology curriculum to closely align with the wine industry calendar year. Under the revised programs, students will be able to take advantage of externships at local vineyards and wineries, while continuing to pursue an Associate’s degree. The curricular changes will result in classroom based instruction that correlates with the industry down times and hands-on work experiences during the busiest times for the industry: harvest and crush, which currently conflict with fall quarter classes. In addition, the college is developing the curriculum for online delivery while maintaining the hands-on technical and science based training using short course and weekend seminars and practicums at the YVCC Teaching Winery and Vineyard.
The grant began on August 1, 2010 and will extend until July 31, 2013.
