Youth Health Service Corps: Adding to the Pipeline

The Youth Health Service Corps (YHSC), a new program for Western Washington Area Health Education Center (WWAHEC), is off to a great start for Fall 2009.

YHSC is a national program based out of Connecticut that engages high school students with the health of their communities.  The program meets service learning standards and is designed to teach, engage, and create passionate youth who appreciate the exploration of future career paths.

The curriculum teaches students about professional standards, cultural competency, and hands on healthcare skills.  Once the students finish training they are required to complete 50 hours of volunteer work within the community.

There are four communities lined up with pilot schools for YHSC in Western Washington, and we are officially recruiting members.   YHSC is also in need of volunteer organizations within the communities of the four pilot schools. The volunteer requirements for YHSC participants provide a challenging level of responsibility and create a drive within students that will open doors for them in the future.

Organizations in which students volunteer benefit from the local service and get the opportunity to teach youth about community service, healthcare careers, and compassion.

If any organizations within (or near) Kelso, La Conner, Tacoma, or Snoqualmie are seeking volunteers please contact Kim Greene at (206) 441-7137 or kimberly@wwahec.org.

››Pierce College Professor Named to State's Veterinary Oversite Board

One of the professors in Pierce College’s veterinary technician program, Markiva Contris, has been appointed by Gov. Gregoire to the state’s Veterinary Board of Governors, the rule-making and governing board for veterinarians.

This is an especially prestigious appointment in that Contris is only the second Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) ever to serve on the board (the first was Deb Cofer, a graduate of Pierce’s vet tech program).

Prior to 2007, there were no vet techs on the Board of Governors. Contris was part of the group that drafted the legislation that required one member of the seven-member board to be a LVT.

Nursing mentoring program starts at Whatcom CC

Bellingham nurse practitioner Angela Belcaster first got into nursing about 30 years ago and understands the struggles of being a new nurse, battling burnout, stress and feelings of inadequate skills.

Now she's trying to help make the next generation of nurses more confident and prepared for careers by sharing her experiences with Whatcom Community College students through the new RN Mentorship program.

Belcaster is one of 30 nurses who have volunteered to mentor 30 first-year nursing students in WCC's program in an effort to increase retention when those students enter the job market. By sharing their own experiences and letting students know that most new nurses have the same fears, Belcaster and others hope to ease the transition into the profession.   more
