What Is A Best Practice?
Despite much discussion, there is no universally accepted definition of a best practice--and continuing debate over terminology and definitions can even create a roadblock to action.
At a minimum, a best practice must: Demonstrate evidence of success, affect something important, that is, contribute to the organization's mission or program goals, and have the potential to be replicated or adapted to other settings (Advance Africa, 2005; United Nations Population Fund, 2001).
- Best Practices are innovative.
- Best Practices make a difference.
- Best Practices have a sustainable effect.
- Best Practices have the potential for replication.
What are the benefits of sharing best practices?
- Raise the overall quality of services;
- Improve operations at poorly performing units so that their performance more closely approaches
that at the best units; - Avoid duplication of effort or "reinventing the wheel";
- Minimize the need to redo work because poor methods led to poor quality; and
- Save money through increased productivity and efficiency (NHS, 2001; Skryme, 2002).
Here are five steps to identify and share promising/best practices within your organization:
- Look for successes
- Identify and validate best practices
- Document best practices
- Create a strategic plan to share best practices
- Adapt and apply best practices

Healthcare Collaboration and Online Learning (Whatcom County and Yakima Valley) The collaborative educational partnership of Whatcom Community College (Bellingham, WA) and Yakima Valley Community College (Yakima/Grandview, WA) and industry has made it possible to train physical therapist assistants (PTA) in an area of the state that needed the trained health care skills, but didn't have a local educational program.
Whatcom Community College developed an online version of its PTA program and partnered with Yakima Valley Community College and area clinics to provide area students the training access and the practical experience necessary to succeed in this profession.
