Health care is one of the fastest growing industries and the list of high-demand occupations is long: Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Laboratory Technicians, Radiology Technicians, Surgical Technicians, Pharmacists, Dental Hygienists, and many, many others.
There's never been a better time for you to imagine yourself in a health care career. The health care industry is facing phenomenal growth that translates to many jobs through the field. Nationwide, health care is expected to generate 3 million new jobs between 2006 and 2016. That's more jobs than any other industry, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Office of Multicultural Affairs - Prematriculation Program
The Prematriculation (PreMat) program is a sponsored and run by the UW School of Medicine Office of Multicultural Affairs and School of Dentistry Office of Educational Partnerships and Diversity. This is a five week summer enrichment program for entering medical and dental students.
The goal of the PreMat program is to facilitate students' transition into medical or dental school. Participants complete an intensive Histology class, and then take a qualifying exam. Those passing the exam receive credit for Hubio-510, Histology, and do not have to take the course in the fall quarter.
In addition to Histology, students receive workshops on:
- Study and test taking skills
- Health Disparities and Cultural competency
- The Independent Investigative Inquiry curriculum requirement
- The various health pathways that are offered at UW School of Medicine and School of Dentistry
- And tips from upperclassmen on surviving medical or dental school.
The 2010 PreMat program will run from June 21st through July 23nd. PreMat takes place at the Magnusson Health Sciences Center on the University of Washington campus. more
Safety Academy
The Association of Washington Business and Sedgwick CMS are offering courses for safety and non-safety professionals who wish to increase their safety knowledge and effectiveness in developing and administering safety programs within their company.
You may choose to participate in individual courses, or you may choose the "Certified Safety Coordinator" program. Students take seven required courses and five electives. Upon completion, the candidate will receive a "Certified Safety Coordinator" certificate.
