Required Materials
Evaluation forms will be handed out at the first meeting, these are the only materials required.

Attendance
Students will attend work as scheduled by their employer and notify their employer if they will be absent.  Student must work five hours each week for the entire quarter for every co-op credit in which they are enrolled.

Course Description
Prerequisite:  None

Cooperative education integrates the students’ classroom study with work experience in cooperating employer organizations.  Students usually alternate periods of college study with extended employment periods in appropriate fields of business, industry, government, social services and the professions.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 

  •  Understand career options and identify career specific tasks

Abilities
Students will have the opportunity to practice the following Abilities as they meet the course objectives:  Service Learning (SL).

Course Objectives
During the course students will:

1.      Improve human relations with co-workers and/or management by being involved in a career specific setting

2.      The student will increase awareness of work ethics and demonstrate industry established standards

3.      Learn responsibility and time management by completing required paperwork on schedule

4.      Integrate academic and career interests with productive work experience and enable students to earn credit while working full- or part-time in jobs related to their college program

Grading Scale
A grade of Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory will be given at the completion of the quarter.  In order to pass this class with a grade of Satisfactory, all forms must be completed and submitted to the instructor.

Student Rights and Responsibilities
The current YVCC catalog reviews your rights and responsibilities as a student.  It also defines various violations (cheating, plagiarizing, etc.) and outlines disciplinary action

Course Expectations

Welcome to Cooperative Work Experience.  Please fill out Form 1 and Form 2.  The dates will be from January 6, 2010 to March 12, 2010.   Make sure you have your employer sign and date Form 2 where it says ‘Employer’.  Make sure your employer also signs Form 3.

On Form 3 list a minimum of 5 objectives, tasks, and functions you usually perform.  Some sample objectives might be as follows—note each objective MUST include (What), (How), (When), and a method of (Evaluation) as shown in the following examples:

  • Read the training manual (What) that is available to employees (How) and write an outline of the most important information (Evaluation) by December 11 (When).
  • I will prepare a routing manual (What) for all carriers and for each truck and will have this information in a typed report (How) for my job supervisor's approval (Evaluation) by March 10 (When).
  • I will learn how to operate a multi-line telephone with an intercom (What) by transferring calls appropriately and taking clearly written messages (How) as determined by my co-workers (Evaluation) by the end of the term (When). 

Taking the credits you have requested and multiplying by five will determine the estimated hours you will work.  You must work 5 hours each week to equal one credit during the quarter.  If you are taking three credits, you need to be working 15 hours each week (5 hours x 3 credits).

Forms 1, 2, and 3 need to be returned to instructor in T-200-E by Friday January 22, 2010

will be returned to instructor as follows:

Friday March 12, 2010 (Note this form 4 is only for one week instead of two like the others)

Form 8: Due Friday March 12, 2010–MAKE SURE YOU GIVE THIS TO YOUR EMPLOYER TO FILL OUT AT LEAST A WEEK AHEAD OF DUE DATE!

It is very important that all forms are turned in and complete no later than December 4, 2009 so that you can receive a course grade and those grades can be posted in Olympia, Washington.
